New Words from Oscar Wilde's "The Nightingale and the Rose"


1. "Hawthorn", a small bush from the rose family.

 The word "hawthorn" is used in imagery describing the garden.

 2. "Mermaiden", a mermaid.

 "Mermaiden" is used in a metaphor describing the colour yellow.

 3. "Frankincense", an incense made from resin, commonly used in rites.

 The "frankincense" are used in a metaphor and personification describing Love.

 4. "Ebbed", to lower, leave (in relation to the tides).

 The nightingale's sacrifice includes her blood being "ebbed".
I really enjoyed this story.  I had read it a few years ago, but I had forgotten how well written it was.

The Visual Elements of the Film Adaptation of: Of Mice and Men 1.
